Wise tunes up for a shot at state crown
THE roar of engines is an all too-common sound at Morgan Park raceway on weekends, especially for returning race car driver Barry Wise.
The Tweed Heads driver was among a strong contingent of drivers competing in the Super Sprint Series at Morgan Park last weekend.
Wise, who was racing in his 1984 Reynard Formula Ford 2000, said he'd been coming to Morgan Park for 15 years.
"It's a very good track - this circuit is quite a tight circuit," he said. "There is plenty of run-off if you do take a corner too fast."
On the back straight, Wise said he could reach speeds of up to 200km/h in his Reynard.
"I get a lot of enjoyment from restoring the cars to their original state," he said.
"I enjoy researching their history but the best thing is to drive them."
The 1984 Reynard Formula Ford 2000 has an interesting history, having graced tracks in both the US and New Zealand.
"I've had this car for 10 years," Wise said. "I bought it in New Zealand and raced it there for a season."
The Queensland Super Sprint Championships will be held at the Morgan Park Raceway on October 18-19.
