Wolves in away games to start new football season
FOOTBALL: Coach Mick Willmot is upbeat about the hopes of the Warwick Wolves this season as they approach the premier men's season opener against Wanderers at Wanderers at 3pm Sunday.
Willmot is a past Raiders coach in the Brisbane premier competition and is coaching for the first time in Warwick this season.
Warwick beat Ballandean 4-0 in a trial on Tuesday night at Ballandean.
Willmot was happy with the defence of his team which played a new defensive formation for the first time.
"Ballandean won the Stanthorpe competition last season so it was a good chance to see how we are playing," Willmot said.
"My main objective on Tuesday night was not to concede a goal and we achieved that.
"We used a couple of the 16/17 years players and they mixed well with the senior players.
"Matt Carey played well up front with Jayden Webb and Joey Campbell also playing well."
Willmot is yet to decide a captain but is happy to be playing Wanderers first up in fixtures.
"Wanderers finished fourth last year so it will be a good test as Wanderers have a lot of new players," .
Wolves women at Gatton
THE Warwick Wolves women's team will return to Football Toowoomba fixtures with a game against Gatton at Gatton on Sunday.
After making the grand final in 2016, Warwick did not field a women's team last year but have returned.
Karen Gilchrist and David Burton are the joint coaches this season.
Gilchrist said the Wolves had a squad of 13 players and had room for additional players.
"All 13 are available this weekend for the trip to Gatton," Gilchrist said.
"We have been playing a lot of sixes games in training and played our first 11-player game this season in a friendly against Ballandean on Sunday.
"The girls lost but did really well against Ballandean considering it is virtually a whole new team from two years ago."
