Wolves off to best start

DOM Benz reckons the Warwick Wolves teams have enjoyed their best start to the season for four years.

On Sunday, Warwick beat Wanderers 3-1 in the premier division game at Wanderers in Toowoomba after winning reserve grade 5-1.

Ricky Sinkins scored a double in premier for Warwick and Morgan Gilchrist netted one goal.

Benz, the senior co-ordinator, rated goalie Shannon Cameron as one of the best for Warwick after returning from a season of AFL.

“Morgan Gilchrist had a strong game, our teamwork was quite good especially with four new players,” Benz said.

In reserve grade, Brett Sinkins scored a treble while Dom Benz and Chris Leach also netted.

Stan Bain and Josh Parker had strong games for the Wolves.

The Wolves have 30 registered players for A and reserve grade and had players on the bench in each game on Sunday.

In the ladies game, Warwick went down 1-0 to Gatton, one of the strongest teams in the competition.

Emily Hoffman, Alana Edwards and Sharni Riley were the best for Warwick.

All three Warwick teams will play against USQ at Toara Park at USQ on Sunday.

Benz said for the first time in three years, the club had sufficient players for each of its teams.

“Anyone keen to play in the men’s competition is still welcome to training at Queen’s Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm,” Benz said.

The draw is only done until this weekend and the Wolves expect the games on the weekend of April 9-10 to be at Queen’s Park.

“We don’t get any say in the draw but hope to play half our games at home,” Benz said.

“The club spent a lot of time looking for debris from the flood on the fields and has placed a lot of top soil in the past two months.

“I reckon the main field is in its best condition for years and is one of the best in the competition.

“Wanderers and Warwick fields are two of the best.”

Later in the season, the Wolves plan a major fund raiser and plan to involve many of the past players in an Oldies game against the current group of Wolves.

Benz said he was sure Bill Manwaring would be a star performer in the Oldies game in a sport he had played for four decades.

“We are keen to hear from past players keen to be involved in the fund-raising day,” Benz said.

Past players keen on the Oldies game are welcome to call Benz on 0407 376013.
