Woman, 52, punches shopper in wheelchair in rage

A WOMAN has appeared in court charged with punching a wheelchair-bound man in the head before unleashing similar attacks on two other people that same afternoon.

Maree Alison Laird began her violent tirade in Rose City Shoppingworld on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 6.

The Warwick Magistrates Court heard Laird entered the centre just before 2pm and proceeded to punch an elderly man in the head, while he sat in his wheelchair.

The 52-year-old woman verbally abused members of the public before exiting the centre.

Outside, Laird encountered her next victim - a man who had just parked his car outside the centre.

She again hurled abuse at the motorist, who was able to bypass Laird - if only for a short time.

The man exited the centre about 10 minutes later, where the agitated woman approached him again and attempted to punch him in the head.

The court heard the man was able to block the punch with his arm.

At about 3pm, Laird was walking along the OO Madsen Bridge but mid-way across, stopped abruptly and punched one of two women behind her "to the face with a closed fist" and swore at the other.

Defence solicitor Daniel Habermann told the court his client was suffering from a hyper bipolar episode at the time of offending.

He added the incidents before the court were the precursor to a three-week hospital stay for Laird but said she had since been medicated and stabilised.

The Warwick woman last week pleaded guilty to charges of assault and public nuisance.

She was ordered to complete 18 months of probation.
