Woman allegedly kidnapped and beaten in Mackay

AT LEAST four men remain on the run after a Mackay woman was allegedly bashed, dragged into a car, and assaulted in a kidnapping ordeal that lasted 40 minutes.

The 39-year-old woman was allegedly confronted by up to five men at the Rydges Mackay Grande Suites on Gregory St about 5.50pm on Sunday, sparking an argument.

The woman was then allegedly assaulted in the foyer of the hotel.

Police alleged the woman was dragged outside, beaten with a metal pole, and forced into a car. The fight was reported to police but by the time officers arrived, her alleged attackers had fled with the woman in tow.

Police say she was then driven south by the group to Bakers Creek, taken out of the car and allegedly further beaten.

Her captors then allegedly set her free.

Police said she ran and hid from them before seeking help from a nearby farmhouse in Bakers Creek.

Paramedics and police were called about 6.30pm. The woman, a Mackay local, was taken in a stable condition to the Mackay Base Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Tucker said the attack was targeted and not random.

"At this stage I think she is very lucky that the injuries that she sustained weren't more serious, there's no doubt about that,” he said.

"While they are quite serious, there certainly was a potential to be much worse.

"She received numerous injuries, as a result of the assault, including a broken arm, and cuts and bruises to most of her body.”

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said the woman and the men knew each other "to a certain degree” and she has since identified them.

"There are a number of people that we are still seeking in relation to this matter,” he said.

"This is a very very serious matter and we've got a number of investigators working on it.

"There is no reason for the Mackay community to fear that they are going to be dragged off the street and assaulted.”

William John Seaborn, 40, of Mackay was arrested on Monday afternoon and faced Mackay Magistrates Court charged with kidnapping, torture, and three charges of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Seaborn did not enter any pleas and he was remanded in custody to reappear on Thursday morning.

A spokeswoman for the Mackay Base Hospital said the 39-year-old woman was treated in the emergency department but was not admitted to hospital.
