Women Ashes cricket has started
HOWZAT with Michael Bourke
THE Australian women's cricket side has started its Ashes campaign off on the right foot to take a 1-0 lead after the first one-dayer.
The experience of Aussie vice-captain and middle-order batter Alex Blackwell's unbeaten half-century made the difference in the opening game, ahead of yesterday's second clash. However, I believe the player to watch for the rest of the Ashes is Aussie leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington, who puts good revolutions on the ball.
Under-12 champs
NEXT week I go to Mackay for a week to watch the under-12 girls Queensland cricket championships.
Darling Downs have won this competition the past two years and again are sending a strong side.
Southern Downs is well represented with four players in the squad of 12. This side has some players who are good at running between wickets, which will play an important part.
Shield scores
WITH all the Aussie men's Test and one-day players playing in the opening rounds of the Sheffield Shield, we are sure to see or hear about some entertaining cricket.
The best thing any young batsman can do is score a century against NSW, which has the Test team's bowling attack.
Horse tip
MY tip for the Moonee Valley Cup on Saturday is for Big Duke.
