Woods eyeing victory in comeback tournament
TIGER Woods hasn't played on the US PGA Tour for 15 months but he will still go into the Hero World Challenge at Albany Golf Club, Bermuda, trying to win.
This time last year before the same event, Woods was wondering if he would ever play again.
This time around, he sees light at the end of the tunnel ahead of the invitational tournament starting on Friday morning (AEST).
"It's a lot better situation this year than last,” Woods said.
"I love (Matt Kuchar) to death, but I can't stand watching him in the cart any more. After last year and the Ryder Cup, that's enough. Now I need to play against him.
"To get back out here at this level has been a challenge - a lot of hard work; an extreme, inordinate amount of patience, which as you all know is not exactly one of my hallmarks.
"So I've had to exercise that more so than usual, but it's allowed me to get to this point where I'm able to compete.”
Woods and Kuchar line up alongside reigning US Open champion and PGA Tour Player of the Year Dustin Johnson, British Open winner Henrik Stenson, US PGA champion Jimmy Walker and Jordan Spieth, who are also in the 18-strong field.
Bubba Watson won with a score of 25-under last year.
It might take a similar score to win the event this year but Woods said he was up for the challenge.
"I'm going to try to do the same thing I always do. I'm entered in an event, I'm going to try to win this thing,” said Woods, who has won the tournament five times.
"I know Bubba went low, shot 25-under. That's going to be a tall order. I haven't played in a while. Shooting 25-under is going to be a little hard, but hey, I'm going to give it my best.
"I'm going to be focused, I'm going to do what I can do and put the ball in the correct spots, give myself looks and try to bury these putts, post scores and get myself in that mix come Sunday afternoon.
"I know that's a tall order since I've been away from the game for so long and I've made a lot of different changes in my game, but the mindset's still the same. That is to go out there and try to beat these guys.”
