Second boulder to be removed to reopen Gap
FRUSTRATION levels for motorists are growing by the day but a second boulder is now set to be removed before Cunningham's Gap is reopened to travellers.
Crews are working to repair damage to the road after a 400-tonne boulder crashed to the ground on Tuesday afternoon.
A Transport and Main Roads spokesman yesterday said crews worked overnight on Wednesday to break up the boulder with a 13-tonne rock breaker.
Despite the damage the hefty rock has caused, a spokesman earlier this week said the boulder removal was planned.
The damaged area was scheduled to be excavated yesterday and workers are expected to start laying asphalt this afternoon.
Although TMR has indicated the road could be reopened to motorists sometime at the weekend, the spokesman said there was still some work to be done.
"While the road is closed, another boulder will be removed from the rock face as well as loose debris just north of the current worksite," he said.
"This work was scheduled to take place under an additional closure.
"The crew will continue to work day and night shifts to get the road open as soon as it safe to do so.
"We are still aiming to have the road open by the weekend, weather and site conditions permitting."
