World class sport right here, no need for Gabba or Suncorp

THERE is no need to head to the Gabba or Suncorp Stadium to watch South Africa in sport.

They will be right here at Morgan Park on April 20-23 for three men's and women's internationals against Australia.

I wasn't born with a polocrosse racquet in my hand and other than going to a few Cunningham carnivals to support the local teams, I had no polocrosse experience before I started as a sports reporter in 1991.

Top-quality polocrosse is as good a sport as you will see.

I still believe the best game I have watched was in a World Cup in Warwick on a Thursday night when Australia beat South Africa.

The floodlights at Morgan Park are superb, the field in great condition and the facilities second to none.

Even if you don't know the rules, jot it down in your diary and head to Morgan Park on the Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights for two games of polocrosse, women's and men's.

Come early and if you like it, you might head out again in next night.

I would be surprised if the Saturday night games aren't deciders. Australia looks pretty good with a mix of experience and youth.

If I was part of the Australian team, I wouldn't study the playing history of the Africans too much as it might pressure me too much.

Seldom does a poor South African team head to our shores in any sport and it certainly won't be this April in polocrosse.

Twelve of the 14 South Africans have a relative in the teams and they come from fewer clubs than the Australians so teamwork won't be a problem.

There are also four sets of siblings in the South African teams, two in the women and two in the men.

We have one set, Suzette Thomas and Lizzie Reid, and I witnessed at the Cunningham carnival on Sunday just how well they combine on the field. So forget what your No.1 sport is, the Aussies need you.
