Wyverns aim to stop unbeaten Corinthians in grand final
HOCKEY: Corinthians coach Rob Pohlman has high hopes his goalie Tamara McGowan will be able to stop the shots from the young Wyverns forwards in the women's grand final in Warwick hockey at 5pm Saturday.
A Corinthians win would cap an unbeaten season for the women in gold.
"We started the season with six players and will have 10 players for the final,” Pohlman said.
"It was one of those seasons where everything went right, the whole team improved.
"We had two players who played their first hockey in seven years this season.
"Our captain Coby Imber is in her first season of hockey after coming from a football background.”
The team trains each Monday night and Pohlman said many of the team had not missed a training session.
"They are pretty dedicated and that shows with our teamwork on the field,” he said.
"It is a guess but I reckon our goalie Tamara McGowan has only conceded 10 goals all season which is an outstanding effort.”
Wyverns coach Gary Millard Gary Millard said teamwork was a key to his team's chances.
"They have trained well in the past fortnight,” Millard said.
"Centre-half Sam McMahon will be one of our key players along with Grace Parsons and Aidyn Jensen. All three have come through our junior system in the last few years.”
As for the opposition, Millard named Mckenzie Wenmoth, Yasmin McWhinney and Tamara McGowan as the three he was most worried about.
"Tamara is hard to get past in goal,” he said.
Both men's and women's fixtures are nine-a-side this season. After the women's grand final, the men's season decider will be at 6.30pm tomorrow.
