Wyverns aiming to go one better than last year in hockey

HOCKEY: Wyverns will be relying heavily on youth as they play Saints in the grand final in Warwick men's hockey on Saturday.

Last season, Wyverns went down in the grand final to Corinthians but the young players in the team all have one more year of experience.

Wyverns president Gary Millard said he would like to think his side could win.

"We lost 2-1 in last season's grand final and have almost the same side,” Millard said.

"Brent Collins is new to the team and Graham Olsen returns after missing a few seasons.”

Millard has no doubt the key for his team will be young guns Matt Eastwell, Jake Reid, Josh Jensen, Simon Rolfe and Tom Mikkelsen.

"Jake Reid will be centre-half and Josh Jensen is likely to play most of the game at centre forward,” he said.

Dion Phillips is set to be Wyverns goalie after playing most of his Warwick hockey in the halves.

"Dion shared the goalkeeping role with Phil Rolfe this season,” he said.

"Saints are a good side with a number of Toowoomba players.”

Saints women's player Kerri Fitch said the men from her club have been on the bottom of the table for three or four years.

"It was disappointing we didn't get our ladies team in the grand finals as well,” she said.

"Greg Uys, Mitch Roberts, Noel King and Jamie Reid are four of the players set to lead the way in the grand final.

"Lewis Broadhurst is in form in goal so he will make it hard for Wyverns to get the ball past him.”

The Saints men's team has eight new players this year, including two up-and-coming Warwick-based players Bailey Rutledge and Nash Domjahn.

"The team includes five players from Toowoomba who rang up at the beginning of the season and asked to play in Warwick,” Fitch said.

"Our men's competition has been stronger this year due to games on a Thursday night rather than Saturday.”
