Young athlete enjoying rich vein of form

TRIATHLON: Warwick State High School student Saxon Charles has tasted success in the only five multi-discipline events he has contested.

He was third in his first triathlon late last year at WIRAC in the 11-15 years age group before coming second in an event at Inglewood, a 200m swim and 2km run.

Saxon won the 10-12 years age group triathlon at Highfields in January before backing up a week later to win the junior event on Australia Day at Stanthorpe.

His most recent success was a second in the 10-12 years age group in the Hell of the West at Goondiwindi when 180 children competed in a 150m swim in the pool, 5km bike leg and 1km run.

Saxon was 14th in his age group after the swim before improving to sixth in the bike leg and second at the end of the run.

He showed plenty of class as a runner last year when he won his age group in orienteering at Darling Downs and finished sixth in the state championships while a student at Glennie Heights State School.

Orienteering is not just about running, competitors also need to accurately read a compass while testing the limits of their endurance.
