Young boxers glove up at Rose City club

BOXING: Damien Lawler has six young boxers eyeing off their first fight in the ring in the next year.

Lawler, who is head trainer for the Rose City Boxing Club, said all six were dedicated and passionate about the sport.

"They are all at different levels and the rule is we let each boxer develop their own skills without any specific time frames,” Lawler said.

Jordan Ball has been training for 10 months and said he was looking forward to his first fight.

"I hope to start sparring towards the end of the year, I go to boxing training five days a week,” he said.

Kye Lawler is one of the youngest members in the club at age 10.

While he was old enough to compete now, he was currently training five days a week in preparation for his first spar later this year and his boxing debut next year.

Bethany McMahon said she trained four afternoons a week with the Rose City club.

"I want to box, I believe I will have a hard punch and long reach,” she said.

Coach Lawler said it was important to work on technique and set drills before boxers were ready for their first spar.

"You need to make sure a boxer puts their body in the right position in the ring and ensure the positioning of their hands is correct.”

He believes each fighter needs at least five spars before their first fight.

"We take boxers to 20 tournaments a year as far as Bundaberg,” Lawler said.

Two Rose City members, Jacko McMahon and Jake Wyllie, are in heavy work for their next fights at the Wide Bay titles at Bundaberg on June 17-18.

They are having the next two weekends off as they aim to defend their titles.

McMahon will be going for his fourth successive Wide Bay title and Wyllie his third.

Both are current state champions.

Rose City Boxing Club has training at 3.30pm weekdays at the Warwick Boxing Club gym, in Albert St, and welcomes new members, either as prospective boxers or people just keen to improve their fitness.
