Young Cowboys fired up

WARWICK Cowboys under-18 coach George McVeigh expects a tight game against Valleys tomorrow in the TRL minor semi final.

“You have to be confident going into any game,” he said.

“We have had one win and one loss against Valleys this season and each side has scored five tries.”

The Warwick side is fit except for attacking back rower Eamon Brownlie who has the flu but is expected to play.

McVeigh said Valleys had the best defensive record in the competition but Warwick had the second best, 20 points worse.

“When you look at statistics, it will be a tight affair.”

On Sunday Warwick kept its line intact in a 42-0 win against Wattles in the Mick Ryan Memorial Trophy.

If Michael O’Keefe comes through A grade without injury tonight, he will play on the wing outside centre Michael Nelson.

McVeigh reckons his side has not reached its full potential in attack this season.

“We are strong on both sides in the three quarters with centre Jeremy Jerome and winger James Olsen on one side, Nelson and O’Keefe on the other side and Mitchell ‘Space’ Lewis coming in to the line from fullback,” McVeigh said.

“I expect our halves combination of Paul Cantwell and Shane Duck to ignite the attacking potential out wide.

“Valleys have a big pack but our much smaller but more mobile pack has matched them with hard work and enthusiasm this season.

“We have got to get up and hit their forward early.”

Draw: Today 7.05pm Warwick v Brothers, A grade. Tomorrow 10am Warwick v Dalby, C grade; 11.15am Warwick v Valleys, U18.
