DRAG RACING: Brittany Rigney will start her second year of drag racing at the bracket meeting this Saturday at Warwick Dragway.

Saturday's meeting is the first for the year at the dragway.

She was introduced to the sport by her partner, Matt Loy, and has competed in three vehicles.

Rigney started her career in a Toyota Corona wagon, then tried her luck in two Holden Commodores and will return to the Corona wagon this year.

"We have put a 350 Chev motor in the Corona,” she said.

Last season, her best time for a one-eighth mile (200m) pass was 7.9 seconds and, with a new motor in the Corona, she is confident she has consistently run just less than eight seconds this year.

As a child, she competed in horse events in shows at Texas and Inglewood and still rides her horse KJ for leisure.

"My main sport is now drag racing,” she said.

"It is something different and gives me an adrenaline rush. I just want to be consistent.”

In drag racing events, the winner is often the driver or rider closest to dial-in time.

Rigney has red-lighted a couple of times in a sport where all drivers aim for the perfect reaction time.

A split-second too quick can mean elimination.

She prides herself on doing a lot of the work on her own car, with help from partner Matt and family friend Ross Costello.

"I definitely get nervous for my first pass at each race meeting,” she said.

"After one pass, I am fine for the rest of the weekend.

"One of the favourite parts of the sport is doing burnouts.”

While she admits the burnouts wear on tyres, Rigney is still on the original tyres on her Corona.

She has never raced partner Matt Loy head-to-head but hopes to get the opportunity once he has his HQ station wagon ready.

Away from drag racing, Rigney is part of the operations staff at Warwick Hospital.

Classes today are quick ET, fast street, street, drag bike, young guns and bike.

Drivers and riders will come from as far as Port Macquarie, Tamworth, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Dalby, Woodburn and Texas to compete.

Nominations are on the dragway website or nominate on the day.

Gates will open at 11am Saturday, scrutineering from 12.30pm, qualifying from 2pm and racing from 7pm.
