THE Warwick Davis Shield side enters its grand final this Sunday against Toowoomba with its youngest squad for a final.

Many of the 13-man squad could still qualify for a U16 competition including Caleb King, Cahal Davis and Jacob Gross.

The final is at Heritage Oval in Toowoomba.

Captain Dave Walker will want an improved batting performance from the top order after there were more ducks appearing on the scorecard against Lockyer last game than the sideshow alley duck game.

Despite the joke about ducks, these young players have what it takes to bring home the Davis Shield to the Southern Downs.

T20 Aussie squad

I NOTICED the two leading wicket takers in the BBL, Sean Abbott and Warwick's Mark Steketee, were both missing for the Australian T20 team named this week.

The leading run scorer Ben Dunk was also missing.

The selectors opted for pace bowler Jhye Richardson from the Scorchers, who nearly missed the final due to Scorchers coach Justin Langer rating Jason Behrendorff a better bowler.

Overall the squad looks strong with a number of unlucky players who could have represented their country with pride.

Volunteers for carnival

A LARGE part of the success of the Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival rests with the commitment of the volunteers.

Many unnoticed hours are put in by committed committee members and other volunteers to make these events possible.

This reminds me of the incredible amount of volunteer hours that people in the Southern Downs area contribute into various events to make our town a better place.
