Young Guns to battle Aspley in Cowboys season opener

RUGBY LEAGUE: The three young guns at the back in last year's Warwick Cowboys A-grade grand final team are back for the Father Ranger Oval clash with Aspley on Saturday night.

Last season, recent under-18 graduates, fullback Craig Donn and wingers Brodie Quirk and Dan Watson were a revelation in the Cowboys march to the season decider.

While coach Craig Mullaly plans to use all three in the same positions, he will start Quirk in the centres against Aspley as last year's club captain Dylan Galloway has a prior commitment and won't play in the first game of the season.

"Dylan is as keen as always and I expect him to have another good season,” Mullaly said.

"There will be a couple of last year's under-18 players in the A-grade starting side for Saturday night.

"I expect a few more from last year to be back for the start of the season.”

Two more from the grand final team who will play against Aspley are halfback Paul Cantwell and centre Joe Fuimaono.

Watson's younger brother Mitch was in the U18 grand final team last season and has graduated to seniors.

"There is a chance both could play in the same A-grade team sometime this season,” Mullaly said.

The Cowboys have been getting 30 at training for the three grades.

Mullaly said he had been working in well with reserve-grade coach Nick Baker.

"Both teams have been training together,” Mullaly said.

"There has been a bit of size to some of the Aspley teams down the years.”

Reserve grade at 5pm, A grade at 6.30pm Saturday. More players welcome at training any Tuesday or Thursday at 6pm.

The first game for the U18s will be against Wattles on Barrett Shield day on March 4 in Warwick.
