Young hockey star shines

WARWICK West State School student Isaac Johnson was presented with two achievement awards in the Queensland Primary School Hockey Championships which finished in Townsville on Sunday.

Isaac played for Darling Downs and won achievement awards from the coach and manager against Peninsula and eventual carnival winner Metropolitan North.

Darling Downs won three games, drew two and lost four games to finish 5th overall in a field of 10.

The side had a 2-1 victory against Metropolitan East, 2-1 win against Capricornia and beat Northern 3-0.

Darling Downs drew with Metropolitan West and Wide Bay and lost to Metropolitan North, Peninsula, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Isaac said he enjoyed the chance to play against different players.

"In club hockey, you play the same people over and over and get to know their skill levels," he said.

Isaac played in attack, defence and the midfield; he felt he played his best hockey at left half.

"I like the halves as you can be involved in attack and defence," he said.

He rated his best game against Metropolitan West despite not winning an achievement award in that game.

"I played my best in both attack and defence in the 2-all draw with Metropolitan West," he said.

"I felt the players with the most skill were from the metropolitan area."

Isaac was the only player from the Southern Downs to represent Darling Downs at the state championships.

The carnival in Townsville was played on a water-based synthetic which is similar to the surfaces in Warwick and Toowoomba.

This year's state championships were the first for Isaac as part of a regional team.

He missed out by 18 days on being eligible to again aim to play for Darling Downs next year when he is in Year 7 at Warwick West.

"I will be aiming to make regional teams when I go to Warwick State High School in Year 8," Isaac said.

On Sunday, Isaac goes into camp at The Scots PGC College with the Toowoomba 1 side which will play in division 1 in next week's state under-13 hockey championships which start in Warwick on Monday.

In 2010 and 2011, Isaac played for the Warwick team in U13 championships in Hervey Bay and Rockhampton so will line up for his third championships at club level next week.

The first games in the under-13 championships will be played on Monday, with finals starting at 11.45am on Friday as a forerunner to the selection of the state team. Games will be played on five fields.
