Young travellers have chance to win the job of a lifetime
YOUNG Australian travellers who can pick up a camera and promote the nation's tourism hotspots could get paid $100,000 to do the job for six months.
In a return to Tourism Australia's best Job in the World campaign of a couple of years ago, the government agency is now offering six "Best Jobs in the World", as part of a new $4 million campaign.
The campaign will see six people employed in Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory, South Australia, Melbourne and Western Australia.
Unveiled in Cairns on Tuesday, new campaign hope to reinvigorate the in-bound international youth tourism market in Australia.
TA managing director Andrew McEvoy said the campaign could entice more young people to come to Australia for a holiday, but also to work in the tourism industry, filling a gap in the domestic workforce.
"We've taken one of the most successful tourism campaigns in recent times - Best Job in the World - and made it bigger and better by coming up with a competition which represents the very best of our country - our breath-taking landscapes and scenery, our unique nature and wildlife, great food and wine and, of course, our huge sense of fun," Mr McEvoy said.
While the campaign hopes to secure more in-bound working holiday-makers, it comes on the back of some falling international youth traveller numbers due to lingering financial uncertainty in Europe.
"Despite recent challenges - such as the high Australian dollar and the global financial crisis affecting some of Australia's traditional Western markets - the youth traveller segment remains an important part of Australia's visitor mix," Mr McEvoy said.
"These are visitors who tend to stay longer, disperse widely and often come back again, with their families, later in their lives.
"For many young people, Australia's working holiday visa programs provide the economic means to fund travel plans, and this is at the heart of our new campaign."
Government figures showed the overall youth tourism sector contributed about $12 billion in 2011-12, bringing in about 26% of the total in-bound tourists.
The six 'Best Jobs in the World' are
- Chief Funster (New South Wales)
- Outback Adventurer (Northern Territory)
- Park Ranger (Queensland)
- Wildlife Caretaker (South Australia)
- Lifestyle Photographer (Melbourne)
- Taste Master (Western Australia)
The jobs come with a six month salary package worth $100,000 including living costs.
