Youngsters demonstrate prowess with athletics

ATHLETICS: Primary school students at the School of Total Education have showed off their athletic prowess at the school's Primary Athletics Carnival.

Three houses - Red, Blue and Yellow - competed against each other with Blue winning the carnival on 208 points, 38 ahead of Yellow on 172.

Red came in third on 152 points.

SOTE health and physical education teacher Ian Rowling said there were a variety of events for students to test themselves in.

"We had shotput, discus, long jump, high jump, javelin, sprints and cross country and the day was capped off with a fun teachers versus parents race," Rowling said.

"It was an absolutely cracking day.

"We had beautiful weather and full participation from the students so we couldn't have asked for it to run better."

Rowling said sports carnivals were an integral part of the school's curriculum.

"It's important for the students to win and lose in the right way," he said.

"It's a great excuse to get outside and have some fun.

"We're looking for students to demonstrate teamwork and sportsmanship.

"Blue did exceptionally well to take out the win, but Yellow and Red competed hard and did themselves proud."

SOTE principal Shane Power said he enjoyed watching all of the students getting involved.

"It's great to see them having a lot of fun," Power said.

"These students practise and learn these skills throughout classes so it's great to see them put them into practice.

"This is a good opportunity to try those skills out in a competitive environment."
