Your letter: No breast service for out-of-towners
WHILE on holidays some 1,000 kms and over I found a lump in my breast that was not quite right.
I was 18 kms north of Tenterfield on Friday of last.
As I was so far from home I knew of the breast screening service , so I googled ‘breast screening’ and found that they were in your town of Lismore so I traveled the 2.5 hours and I arrived on Saturday morning.
I tried ringing the breast screening service but no one was there.
This morning I finally got a real person (as I am over 50 ,it's been at least five years since my last mammogram ) and after asking if I could have an appointment made for Lismore, as I have found a lump in my breast, I was advised to see my own doctor so he or she could order the mammogram.
So in a nut shell I can't use a service for this specific reason because I may or may not have a lump of any importance.
So my options were to find some local doctor, which I might add wasn't easy.
I rang your local hospital but my call was diverted and never answered so I hung up.
After almost one hour looking for a doctor I found a real doctor in Lismore.
So I rang and explained why I rang, that I needed a mammogram and ultrasound and she in return explained I needed a referral from the service in Lismore or Ballina
So with little or no hope for the woman that may or may not have breast issues in your area I can only say God save our breasts from fools like this.
Very very sad I must say
