YOUR SAY: Dangerous drivers disappoint Warwick rider

Warwick cyclist and Masters Track Cycling gold medallist John Eder shares his thoughts on riding around the Rose City.

I LOVE riding in and around Warwick, we live in a beautiful part of the world.

I am thankful that for the most part motorists are respectful to cyclists and give us as much space as possible when passing us.

Occasionally there are motorists that deliberately drive close to us, for whatever reason, which is disappointing and obviously dangerous.

There are also motorists who seem to be in a hurry or inattentive and are not willing to slow down when there is oncoming traffic and thus pass by us closely.

I know when I am driving and I need to slow down to safely pass cyclists it really only costs me five to 10 seconds.

I ride to and from work every day and train up to five days a week.

About every three weeks if I don't get on my brakes to avoid a motorist doing the wrong thing they would hit me.

I know when I am driving and need to make a decision (such as park, turn, at an intersection) I have think "look for a cyclist”.

In my opinion one way to improve safety for road users would be to have more shoulder on the road and for that shoulder to be clean of debris and smooth.

For the most part I do feel safe riding in and around Warwick and am appreciative of the respect motorists give me.
