Youth unemployment on rise
EMPLOYMENT agencies in the Warwick region say they are concerned after the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed youth unemployment has risen since mid-year.
Youth unemployment was recorded at 12.3 per cent, up from 11.9% in June.
While the figures for the Darling Downs-Maranoa were lower than areas such as Ipswich (20.1% youth unemployment) - among others, Mission Australia regional manager Deeann Natividad said it was important to ensure that young people didn't fall through the cracks.
"As a leading provider of employment and community services for youth, Mission Australia sees the impact high unemployment is having on our young people every day," Ms Natividad said.
"The youngest, least-experienced employees are often the first to lose their jobs when times are tough and they are often the last to return.
"We need to boost opportunities for our youth, and support them with better training and transition programs so they don't slip through the cracks between education and employment."
Temp Solutions owner Nicole Kane said grammatical mistakes on resumes and poor impressions created by social media profiles were big factors in young people unable to find employment.
"Being employed at a young age gives you so much life experience," she said.
"I just worry that so many young people won't get that life experience without employment."
Mrs Kane said the best thing job seekers could do was get out into the community.
"Friends of mine who own businesses tell me about people who come into the store and converse face-to-face," Mrs Kane said.
"I really think just getting out there is the key."
However, it was not all bad news; Ms Natividad said the region had always had a buoyant jobs market, with several industries such as farming and resources, as well as larger businesses based in the area.
Additionally, figures showed the general unemployment rate in the Darling Downs-Maranoa region sits at 3.2%, the second-lowest in the state.
