Zonta calls on Paralympian to speak on Women’s Day

ZONTA'S annual International's Women's Day breakfast always aims to inspire and this year's guest speaker has inspiration swimming through her veins.

The organisers, who traditionally engage an inspirational local personality as guest speaker, have not disappointed listeners' expectations for the event.

Brooke Dwan, who has represented Australia in two Paralympic Games for swimming, will address the audience.

The two-time Queensland Sportswoman of the Year nominee, who has won four bronze medals, will speak about her experiences as an athlete and challenges she has had to overcome.

"I'll just try to be honest and talk from the heart," she said. "I believe some of the skills I learnt from being an athlete are something women will be able to relate to".

Mrs Dwan said Paralympians had to work as hard as, if not harder than, able-bodied athletes.

"You need to fight through the disability and society's perception of Paralympic athletes."

Often called upon to speak during the peak of her athletic career, Mrs Dwan feels she is prepared for the big day.

"Being a teacher gives me a bit of confidence in front of groups of people.

"It's easier than a classroom because everyone is actually quiet and listens," she joked.

Pursuing her education career to Warwick in 2004, Mrs Dwan began working at Scots PGC and met her husband Matthew.

Mrs Dwan said her athletic career feels like a "lifetime ago" now settled with husband daughter Willow.
