Students learn this sniffer dog has a nose for biosecurity

THE Year 10 agricultural science class at The Scots PGC College was lucky to have some special guests drop in recently.

Mr Greg Horrocks, a senior officer with Biosecurity Queensland, and his trusty sniffer dogs dropped in to talk to the class about soil pollution and how sniffer dogs were once used to help landholders locate affected areas.

The presentation was part of a sustainable agriculture unit, in which students studied a number of land degradation issues that affected Australian agriculture.

Mr Horrocks explained to the class that due to a lack of funding for the program that sniffer dogs were now only used by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for locating pests, such as fire ants.

He gave a practical demonstration on how his sniffer dogs work and the students thoroughly enjoyed his visit.
