Sky News host Chris Kenny says there has been a “big development” and some “promising news” in relation to the planned extraction of water reserves in drought-stricken Queensland communities. The ongoing and damaging drought, which has affected the water reserves of many stricken communities, is expected to be exasperated by the planned water mine in the Southern Downs region of Queensland. The planned mine which was recently approved by the local council is expected to extract 96 million litres of water a year which will then be sold by the company 'Joyful View Garden Real Estate Development Resort Co'. However, Mr Smith said Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk conceded her government would consider “calling in” the development action. Mr Smith said the Chinese owners have also stated that they would not bottle water during the drought. “ So it's a big development which hopefully might stop any damage being done to aquifers, and may even lead to farmers being able to extract more from groundwater too,” he said.
